Police responded to a pair of thefts at the Woodbridge Center mall over the weekend.

On Friday, a police officer working an off-duty assignment at the shopping center was called to the Hollister store shortly after 7 p.m. A store manager reported an unknown person had stolen 72 Brooks Street camisoles, with a total value of $1,754.

The camisoles had been on a lower shelf display at the rear of the store, police said. The manager said he did not recall seeing any suspicious persons. Police are investigating.

At 1:42 p.m. Sunday, police were called to the JC Penney on a report of an attempted theft. According to police, Maria Mackowska, 53, of the township was observed by the store's loss-prevention officers placing several items in her purse. Police said she also was wearing a stolen shirt under her jacket. In total, police said Mackowska attempted to leave the store with $753 worth of shirts, blouses and skirts.

Mackowska was arrested and charged with robbery. Bail was set at $20,000 without the option of posting 10 percent.

Couple charged with shoplifting

A couple from the township's Fords section was arrested Friday at about 7:45 p.m. after they tried to steal six clothing items from Walmart on Route 9 North in Hopelawn, police said.

Kevin McGrory, 53, and his wife Deborah, 49, entered the Walmart on Friday and attempted to leave the store with six items of clothing -- valued at $54.50 -- concealed in Deborah McGrory's pocketbook, police said.

When store security officers confronted them as they tried to leave the store, Kevin McGrory dropped to the ground while Deborah McGrory ran to the family's car, which was parked in a handicapped zone, police added.

Police later found that Kevin McGrory was in possession of a small wrench and two knives during the attempted shoplifting, authorities said.

Deborah McGrory was charged with shoplifting and hindering the apprehension of another. She was released on her own recognizance.

Kevin McGrory was charged with shoplifting, hindering his own apprehension, unlawful possession of weapons and burglary tools.

Both also were charged with using a juvenile to commit an offense.

Police discovered Kevin McGrory was wanted on a $1,500 warrant from South Plainfield. Bail for Kevin McGrory was set at $5,000 without the option of posting 10 percent, and he was turned over to the Middlesex County Department of Corrections for commitment.
