Woodbridge teachers union calls Gov. Christie a ‘bully’ – UPDATE

Mostly WTEA members and supporters at Woodbridge school board's meeting to adopt 2010-11 budget.
Nearly a hundred members and supporters of the Woodbridge Township Education Association crammed the Board of Education's meeting Wednesday night to deliver a message: the union will not take a pay freeze and they will stand up to "the bully in Trenton," Gov. Chris Christie.
It's a school yard fight that will cost the school district at least $2.6 million that could be realized if the 2,000-member teacher and support staff union agree to forgo raises to their yearly salary increments. Christie has also promised extra state aid to districts where employees agree to freeze pay.
School officials had hoped the union would agree to concessions to spare some of the more than $12 million in programs and jobs cut from next year's $182.5 million budget. About 280 jobs will be lost. On Wednesday, only board member Judy Leidner voted against adopting the budget, which proposes a 4 percent school tax increase.
While unions in other districts, such as Bridgewater-Raritan, Metuchen and Edison, have proposed freezing salaries for year, the Woodbridge association says it is “not backing down now.”

Addressing the board, WTEA vice president William Leahy said members were 9 to 1 against opening the contract.
“Other unions are asking us what we're doing, and we're standing up,” Leahy said. “And if we stand together, we'll beat (Christie) right out of Trenton, and that is what it's about.”
Colonia High School teacher Mary Sue Fisco, a union firebrand who serves on the New Jersey Education Association's county and state panels, said the union's battles are not “just about education. It's about our rights and our jobs.”
“I'm tired of the disrespect from the parents of our community,” she said as her colleagues cheered. “If I begin to pay the 1.5 percent (toward health insurance) I take a pay cut and I will not do that!”
An angry Fisco also claimed that Christie called Woodbridge residents “white trash” on NJN News Wednesday night, but TV news archives do not show the governor making any such comment, which hasn't been reported elsewhere, either.
A Christie spokesman this week did point to the Woodbridge union as an example of “an unmovable force. . . refusing any compromise whatsoever and putting jobs of colleagues on the line instead.”
Board president Brian Molnar agreed.
“Mr. Leahy, you have members that are being hurt,” he said.
The meeting was the most raucous of any the forums the school board has held this year. Schools Superintendent John Crowe called for unity to lobby for more funding from Trenton.
“We must come together and we must understand there is nothing to be gained by allowing the governor to divide the great community of Woodbridge,” he said.

Exactly…….agree 150%. You cannot blame the teachers. I do believe you can blame the union unless they can come up with unequivacle proof they are abiding by the teachers wishes to not put it out for full membership voting. I would never blame the teachers. I am not one, woudn’t want to be one, and respect the job they do. Im sure most people don’t come home from work with the amount of takehome stuff they have or have to buy so many supplies to use at work. As a matter of fact most of us don’t spend money for supplies like they do. I thinh alot of the people who were bashing the teachers are realizing it is not the average teacher who is refusing a freeze and that has hopefully casted a better light on them.

A couple of points I missed on my first go-round:
1–The article states “Nearly a hundred members and supporters of the Woodbridge Township Education Association crammed the Board of Education’s meeting…”; Question #1: Were any members of the “general public” able to “squeeze in”, and speak THEIR minds? If so, why does the article not quote them?
2–Brian Molnar is quoted as telling Mr. Leahy of the WTEA “Mr. Leahy, you have members that are being hurt…”; did Mr. Leahy respond? If so, what did he say?
3–Let’s see…100 members of a 2000-person union show up; that’s about 5%, right? Yet, Leahy says “the members” voted 9 to 1 against opening the contract. Further, we’ve heard, albeit anonymously, from WTEA teachers who say that THEY in particular received no such “ballot” to vote. So, Mr. Leahy, what was the ACTUAL vote count? Or, was this indeed just a “polling” of the union executive board and the school reps?
4–In the past, I have participated in organizations with similar structures…and every time there’s been a potentially divise, or otherwise important issue that requires a vote of the members, it has ALWAYS been conducted via secret ballot-to insure fairness, and the member’s ability to vote their conscience, and not be influenced by “mob rule”.
5–Mr. Crowe needs to remember that he works for, and answers to ME and the other taxpayers of Woodbridge; he is not paid by, or works for, the WTEA. He needs to get HIS priorities straight, and perhaps clean his own house on School Street FIRST.
Lastly, again let me remind everyone that Fisco and Leahy each have 30+ years in; as such, since they’re now eligible for their extremely comfortable pensions, I think it’s high time for both of them and their ilk to step aside…particularly since it’s clear that THEIR focus is on protecting their own hindquarters and benefits, instead of actually educating students.

My answer to Mary Sue:
It’s definitely not about the children!! It’s all about greedy arrogant people like yourself who could give a rats a** about the taxpayers in Woodbridge. You might be a teacher but I’d sure love to know how much your making on the side working for the NJ Extortion Assc. Because what your making working them is funded 100% by the taxpayers too. We pay your salary and you in turn send them $750 a year in extortion dues and they in turn do nothing but lavish themselves with huge salaries and spend million every week on TV ads backing or bashing politicians.
I care what they vote on tonight Tues. 4/6, because it will still ask for a tax hike which is not acceptable any longer.
We will vote down this budget on the 20th and it will be handed over to the town council for trimming. Mayor John McCormac had better make sure that our taxes don’t go up again, because he will suffer when he’s voted out of office because of this. Every dam year our taxes have gone up and enough is enough. If we continue to let this happen, where does it end. We must put an end to it now, this year!! There is plenty of waste in the school district that can be fixed. Way to many fat cats making way to much money for jobs that are not needed. I think I read 35 people in the WBOE making $98,000 or more and 8 vice principals for 3 high schools making in excess of $111,000???
That’s a lot of wasted money that could go to good use. Lastly, it’s not about the children, not when 85% or more of the budget goes to the school districts salaries and benefits which borders on ridiculous. Then this other fact that every teacher gets a merit raise every year and this is on top of the 3% that Christy is asking them to for go for one year.

it’s too bad the union would rather see people lose their jobs instead of accepting a small pay cut. speaking as someone who unexpectedly lost her job 6 months ago, i would much rather have been given the opportunity to take a small pay cut or pay more for benefits in order to spare my job and the jobs of so many of my coworkers who were also the victims of massive layoffs. union members are a bunch of spoiled crybabies who only care about themselves.

If you all want teachers to take a pay freeze because our taxes are so high then you should of wanted Christie to start with ..” we are all in this together starting with me I will take a pay cut, I will ask all public workers to take a pay freeze and ask those making over $400,000 to continue the tax for another year.” Then we are in it all together. Instead his comments are I’m going to break the union. Instead its teachers should take a pay freeze what is he doing himself, he’s a millionaire what is he giving up? We all need unions. Your pay cuts happened because you don’t have a union and should. This is just another attack on the middle class. The middle class instead of fighting each other to race to the bottom should boosting each other so we get to stay middle class. While the rich get richer the middle class get poorer.

Canear:
C’mon…are you serious? Christie gets $157,000 per year as governor-which, let’s be honest, is a 24/7/365 position; how many evenings and weekends per year does Christie get to spend with his family?
Meanwhile, Mrs. Fisco and Mr. Leahy are pulling down over $100 G’s for 10 months’ worth of work; and, just how many evenings does a shop teacher spend grading “homework”? AND, I’m certain that Mrs. Fisco doesn’t perform “treasurer” duties for the County teacher’s union for free, and is no doubt compensated for her NJEA work as well.
“We all need unions. Your pay cuts happened because you don’t have a union and should.”
Well, a century ago, YES, unions were needed to combat unsafe and unhealthy working conditions. Unfortunately, the unions, just like our so-called “representatives”, got lazy, fat, and greedy…the difference, though, between public and private sector unions is simple:
–A private company that is struggling, and gets no help from its unions or employees, will just go out of business…plenty of examples out there-GM, anyone? Oh, but wait, it’s OK that the reorganized GM can hire back workers at $14/hour-yet Woodbridge school bus drivers get $20+/hour?
–A public sector entity will just keep soaking the taxpaying public…or the fat, comfortable well-paid old timers will allow the hard-working “young ‘uns” to get cut-the ones who can least afford it!
And sorry Canear, I do NOT consider Perth Amboy athletic director (AND Woodbridge councilman) Gregg Ficarra and his pre-school vice principal wife (what pre-k school needs a VP, anyway?) “middle class” when their combined salaries exceed $230,000…and they’re looking at pensions above $150,000!
Speaking of unions like the WTEA and the NJEA:
—Did you know that Brian Geoffroy, while “on leave” as WTEA prez, gets a $97,000+ salary from his “members”?
—NJEA executive director Vince Giordano has a compensation package above $400K?
—The NJEA spouts off about their “Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education”; you think that’s for teacher improvement, right? WRONG-Check this out:
http://www.njea.org/page.aspx?a=4119
“Youth Led Action for Social Change”??? Yep…and our kids can’t “spel” or “rite” correctly.
And, here’s a great resource to check out these “non-profit” organizations:
http://foundationcenter.org/findfunders/990finder/
Note that you don’t need to fill in all the fields; for example, entering 07095 will give you all non-profits in that zip code. And, the site provides you with links on how to read the tax forms.

I’m appalled to hear the WTEA not willing to take a stand and insist on the teachers take a pay freeze, and for some teachers not willing either, makes me sick. It’s not about Trenton, it’s about your greed. How about you save jobs of your fellow teachers? Mary Sue Fisco, in the real world people take pay freezes or Merit Increases. It’s called a Merit Increase in the real world because it’s based upon an Employees Performance, unlike you Mary Sue Fisco which gets a guaranteed raise regardless of what you do. Most Employees give 3% or more for Healthcare and your being asked to give 1.5%. It’s not a pay cut, you should be paying for it anyway. Last year my company placed a 5% pay cut across the board, increased our Healthcare contribution, stopped 401k matching and the CEO took a $1.00 salary until the economy got better. This was done. SO NO ONE HAD TO BE LAID OFF. Yes, it hurt but this is the right thing to do. Stop blaming Trenton and Christie. The WTEA and the NJEA are laying off teachers. I feel sorry for the Teachers who actually care for our Kids and truly go out of their way to make a difference in their lives. They are the ones who are going to be laid off. I have to depend on the overpaid Educated Idiots of Woodbridge Township to teach my kids.

Native. .. for the record, theWTEA cannot FORCE/INSIST on anything. The teacher’s union advises and the general membership needs to vote. You chose your job and as a result of the economy had to make concessions. Teachers were offered pension and benefits and should not be criticized for taking that job. I am not sure how that makes them idiots? I think it makes them pretty damn smart! Who would turn those perks down? One final note – it’s unappreciative parents like you that make the job so much harder. And you are free to home school if you don’t want those “idiots” educating your child! Nice mouth woodbridge parent!

Union Reps will not ask teachers, cafeteria workers, custodians, etc. if they would be willing to take a pay freeze — it would set the wrong precedent. The union members must speak up but I admit it would be scarey to do. Have you ever seen the movie “Silkwood”? But remember there’s power in numbers!

Trish-
It would not be the first time union officials ask their members if they’re willing to re-open their contracts. Ever here of a company called General Motors? Chrysler? Are you familiar with a little union called the UAW?
