Woodbridge St. James Varsity Cheerleaders

The 13 girls who make up the St. James Varsity Cheerleaders team have something to cheer about: they returned home from an international cheer competition April 11 in Connecticut as division and grand champions.

The Catholic school team remains undefeated this season, coach Laura Haag said.

The cheerleaders, spanning the 5th to 8th grades, outscored other school and recreation teams, and outscored 60 other teams to become the Grand Champions during the Xtreme Spirit International Cheer and Dance Competition in New Haven, Conn. The girls held their own against cheer teams with high school teens.

Haag said the team will learn May 14 how they fared internationally.

The team has been invited to perform during halftime at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla., an offer the team is still considering, Haag said.
