Woodbridge domestic violence responders seeking more volunteers

WOODBRIDGE, NJ -- The phone rings and it's the Woodbridge Police Department. For one of the 35 volunteers with the Woodbridge Township Domestic Violence Response Team, the call means it's time to counsel yet another victim of domestic violence.

Every year the response team responds to about 300 calls, volunteer coordinator Linda J. Squillace said. Since 1993, the non-profit group has acted as an extension of the police department.

“We do a lot of the stuff the police don't have the time to do -- to sit with the victim, talk with them, sometimes for hours,'' Squillace said.

“One of the biggest things we help them do is to get a restraining order, but even if they are not looking to do that we like to tell them what is available in the community'' such as shelters, support groups and legal and financial help.

The response team is seeking more volunteers to attend the 40-hour training this fall. Applicants should have a driver's license and their own transportation, be able to speak and read English well, and lack mental illness and a criminal history.

Volunteers are on call at least two shifts a month. Police call or page volunteers when a victim is at headquarters.

“You have to be willing to listen, you have to have some passion and empathy for people in these situations and really want to help them,'' Squillace said about prospective volunteers.

Some of the volunteers are survivors of domestic violence or have known victims. The team has three active men.

“It hits everybody, all the ethnic and financial groups. It doesn't matter if you're a doctor or janitor,'' she said.

Police in New Jersey reported 70,613 domestic violence offenses in 2008, the most recent year for which statistics are available, according to the State Police's annual domestic violence report.

Most offenses were assaults (30,023) and harassment (30,429); 57 were homicides. Women were victims 76 percent of the time.
