Tom Maras: While Rome burned

by Tom Maras on Sep 4th | Email

Most readers will recall the old saying about Rome burning, while Nero fiddled! Well, there may be a tragic irony between that tale and the McCormac/Avenel-Colonia First Aid Squad saga.

Reportedly, a life was lost on August 17, 2010. The unconfirmed details are:

Woodbridge Township EMS was called at 10:25 AM to respond to a cardiac arrest report at the Woodbridge Development Center. The squad arrived at 10:37 A.M. After the victim was pronounced dead, the squad left at 10:50 A.M.

No one should think for a moment the good members of the Woodbridge squad didn’t do all in their power to save the life of that victim. Still, one has to wonder if the ACFAS was in operation, would their average response time of approximately 5 minutes to the Center (a 7 minute savings) have meant the difference between life and death in this instance?

I, for one, would love to heard Mayor John McCormac’s reply on the question. Unfortunately, there is and never can be a definitive answer to the question. What we do know, however, is that while John McCormac drags the ACFAS matter through the courts, puts a task force together, to select a Board he can approve of, more lives are at risk!

Let us not forget our Township Council. What are they doing on this issue; awaiting further instruction from the mayor? Why? Didn’t the mayor make the council irrelevant in this matter when he decided to select his task force!

An Emperor once fiddled around, while is community suffered. Do we have one (a mayor) who is more interested in looking for votes, open spaces and places to sell his bonds (NW Capital/Financial?), while the lives of this community remain at an elevated risk, owing to his inflexibility on such an important safety matter?

The time could be rapidly coming when John E. McCormac will have to pay the piper, for his fiddling with our community.
