WOODBRIDGE, NJ -- A group of American and Australian firefighters making a cross-country trip in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be running up Route 1 through Woodbridge this evening.

The itinerary posted on the Tour of Duty team's website says the runners should be in Woodbridge sometime between 10 and 11 p.m. A live GPS-tracked map on their site showed the runners in Trenton at about 6 p.m.

The 4620-mile run began on Aug. 12 in Los Angeles. The 32 firefighters have raced to New Orleans, Chicago and Washington.

Tonight they will run the entire length of Route 1 from Trenton, across the Raritan River, through Edison, Fords, Iselin, Avenel, Linden up to Newark Liberty International Airport and finally onto the George Washington Bridge, where 180 pipers will lead them to the Ground Zero site in lower Manhattan.

Some local firefighters were expected to hang out at eateries along Route 1 to await the runners and cheer them on, according to conversations on Facebook.

The team's website says that the runners took breaks at 8.46 a.m. of each day of the journey to honor the victims of the WTC attacks.

Every morning, two of the firefighters called out names of eight emergency responders who died in the attacks. Every mile of the journey was dedicated to one of the 2,976 civilians killed, the site says.
