WOODBRIDGE, NJ -- A flag-football tournament in Port Reading and fitness club in Iselin are among the fund-raising activities being organized to benefit hometown hero Eric LeGrand, the Rutgers junior defensive tackle who was paralyzed from the neck down after a game injury last month.

Retro Fitness on Route 1 in Iselin is inviting members and non-members to workout from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 20 for the Eric LeGrand Believe Fund, established last month to help the player's family.

People who come to the gym are asked to donate $10 for the fund.

"The owners and I felt it's a horrible then when you see a local kid have a tragedy like that happen. We felt the need to step up and give a hand," manager Dominick Zadera said.

A week later, the Port Reading Saints Pop Warner program, which gave the Avenel native his start on the gridiron, will have their 2nd annual Turkey Bowl adult flag-football tournament -- this year to raise money for the Eric LeGrand Believe Fund.

Registration for teams of eight to 16 players for the 9 a.m. game Nov. 27 was due today. The cost is $15 a player. Spectators can buy tickets for $5 adults and $2 child. Proceeds to the LeGrand fund, Saints assistant coach Brian Casey said.

Casey, who also volunteers with the Woodbridge High School football team, said LeGrand had come back to visit younger players in his former teams. LeGrand played for Colonia High School before signing up at Rutgers.

On Monday, LeGrand was transferred back to the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange after having been admitted Saint Barnabas Medical Center with a high fever five days earlier.

He has remained paralyzed since his Oct. 16 injury. Rutgers will be unveiling the ""Believe 52'' banner for fans to sign at the Scarlet Walk next to gate D in front of Rutgers Stadium between noon and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The banner will be hung inside before kickoff.

Fund raisers elsewhere include a 15 percent sales donation on Friday by the Qdoba Mexican Grill at 385 George St., New Brunswick. Gov. Chris Christie is expected to make an appearance. Local radio station WCTC 1450-AMwill broadcast from the restaurant from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On Tuesday, Saladworks on Centennial Avenue in Piscataway will donate 10 percent of the day's sales to the LeGrand fund.
