GARDNER: Mayor McCormac should help in school funding effort

EDITOR'S NOTE: Ken Gardner is a resident of Woodbridge.

All property taxes whether for town, school, fire or county come out of the same resident’s pocket. It is amazing that mayor and former state treasurer John E. McCormac fails to see this. Instead of supporting or giving his position on a bond to fix school roofs, he says “I’m not sure yet…I stay out of their stuff..”

Mayor, I know Woodbridge is my stuff and& I will support the school bond to fix our school roofs. The mayor knows the roofs are badly in need of repair. The School Board is even including “green” solar panels that greatly reduce the cost to us. Supporting this is good government & good for all of Woodbridge.

Unfortunately, McCormac recently sent out the famous pie chart that shows a distribution of municipal property taxes trying to separate him from other needed services to our township residents. McCormac’s actions show he is part of a much bigger property tax problem. The Mayor’s behavior is what has created the property tax crisis we are in. Until McCormac realizes that it is all “our stuff” the system cannot improve.

A group of supporters and I realize that state school aid is the most significant property tax issue facing Woodbridge. On several occasions I have spoken and written to Gov. Chris Christie, the education commissioner and both their senior staffs regarding the need to fairly fund our township’s schools. If McCormac would look at his pie chart he would see there is no more important issue to all Woodbridge residents. Instead McCormac refuses to help us.

I would like to thank Dr. John Crowe and the editorial board of the Home News Tribune for continually recognizing that Woodbridge is not being treated fairly by the state regarding school aid. It is time that our Mayor joins us. I will vote yes and continue to ask the state to properly fund Woodbridge.
