WOODBRIDGE, NJ -- Stricter federal clean-air laws are driving business to a local motor-oil distribution company.

Carteret-based Prime Lube has expanded into a 15,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the Avenel section of Woodbridge. This month, the facility on Mileed Way began production on BlueSky, a brand of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF).

The fluid, made partly with natural gas-derived urea, allows diesel engines to reduce the amount of nitrous oxides they release into the atmosphere.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency has regulated emissions of nitrogen dioxide -- a greenhouse gas believed to contribute to climate change -- since 1971.

Stricter regulations went into effect this year. Prime Lube, partnering with German DEF manufacturer Kruse Group, will be able to produce about 4 million gallons of DEF a year.

Company officials expect the Avenel plant's production capacity to increase as demand for BlueSky grows. The plant's six-person workforce will likely also grow, Prime Lube chief operating officer Robert Arbasetti said.

“The most advantageous part of having the facility here in New Jersey is that we will be able to produce the product locally and reduce the cost of transportation to the end user,” Arbasetti said.

Mayor John E. McCormac, whose administration has been trying to attract companies and business start-ups in the environmental field, said Prime Lube's new facility “is a sign that the word is out that Woodbridge is very business-friendly.”

“We're fielding calls weekly from companies looking to move here and expand,” he said.

Arbasetti said Prime Lube is looking to distribute BlueSky from Virginia to Canada, where diesel emissions also are regulated.

Company and municipal officials plan to attend a welcoming ceremony for the Avenel facility next month.
