WOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- Two Newark men face charges after breaking into a FedEx office in Avenel and leading police on a chase into Rahway last weekend, officials said.

Haamid Bashir Stroughn, 18, and Omari A. Jemmott, 20, are each charged with burglary, theft, eluding and obstruction.

Officers responded at 3:20 a.m. Dec. 19 to a burglar alarm at the FedEx office on East Essex Avenue, police said. While en route they passed a green minivan with its headlights off on Homestead Avenue.

The officers turned around, caught up to the vehicle and activated their lights and sirens before the van sped off, police Capt. Roy Hoppock said. That set off a pursuit that lasted several minutes and ended when the van struck a curb in Rahway.

Jemmot, the driver, jumped out and took off running, while Stroughn was apprehended at the scene, Hoppock said. Woodbridge and Rahway police apprehended Jemmot a short time later in a back yard off East Hazelwood Avenue.

Police returned to the burglary scene to find a front office window shattered by a brick and a rear bay door open, the captain said. Investigators determined the suspects removed several pieces of electronics from the office.

Stroughn and Jemmot were both being held Thursday at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $20,000 bail, with no 10-percent cash option.
