WOODBRIDGE, NJ -- A clerk was injured Tuesday when he tried to fight off an armed robber at a convenience store in the Menlo Park Terrace section of Woodbridge, police said.

The victim at the Stop N Go store, 88 West Kelly St., told police the man entered the shop about 5:40 p.m., grabbed a few items and began to check out. As the clerk bagged the items, the man grabbed his shirt and demanded cash.

When the clerk began to struggle, the robber pulled out a knife and started to slash at his hands, Capt. Roy Hoppock said. The assailant then fled the store.

It was not immediately clear if the man took any cash.

Woodbridge police responded, as did an Edison police dog and canine officer, Hoppock said. They searched the area for the robber but were unsuccessful.

The victim appeared to need stitches and was taken to JFK Medical Center in Edison, the captain said.
