Man charged in Woodbridge convenience store robbery, suspected in other holdups
WOODBRIDGE, NJ -- A Newark man has been charged with slashing a convenience store clerk during a robbery in the Menlo Park Terrace section of Woodbridge last week, police said.
Edgardo Melendez, 30, was arrested Friday night and is a suspect in four other recent robberies in the area, Woodbridge police Capt. Roy Hoppock said. He is charged with robbery, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and weapons offenses.
The holdup at the Stop N Go store, 88 West Kelly St., took place around 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11. Police said the clerk was bagging items when the purported customer suddenly grabbed his shirt and demanded cash.
When the clerk began to struggle, the robber pulled out a knife and started to slash at his hands, Hoppock said. The suspect then fled the store with about $3,000 in cash.
A search of the area was unsuccessful, but a subsequent investigation led Woodbridge police detectives to a business in Piscataway, where Melendez was arrested around 7 p.m. Friday.
“They worked pretty steadily to get this guy, because he’s a danger,” Hoppock said.
Investigators also consider Melendez a suspect in a Jan. 8 robbery at a Raceway gas station in the township’s Fords section, the captain said. In that case, the clerk at the Lafayette Road business told police a man brandished a large knife before fleeing with up to $700 in cash.
Hoppock said Edison police were also investigating his involvement in three recent robberies in the neighboring township.
Bail was set at $150,000, Hoppock said.
