WOODBRIDGE, NJ -- A gunman stopped a woman who was walking to work through Menlo Park Terrace on Monday and threatened to shoot her before fleeing with her purse, police said.

The victim, 37, told police she was walking to White Castle along Menlo Avenue at 6:30 a.m. when a red sedan traveled past her, turned around and passed her again. The car was then parked, and out stepped a man who approached her and told her to stop.

The woman believed the man was going to ask her for directions, but he instead demanded her purse, police said. When she refused, the robber pulled a handgun from his left pocket and aimed it at her.

The man said, “Give me your purse or I’m going to shoot you,” and then snatched the bag from her hand, the victim told police. He then said, “If you don’t start running when I count to three I’m going to shoot you.”

The woman fled toward her home in the opposite direction, police said.

She described the bandit as a thin black man who is about 6 feet, 3 inches tall and was in his mid 20s to early 30s, according to the police report. He was wearing tan or cream colored sweat pants and an unzipped sweat shirt with the hood pulled over his head.

The black purse contained a red wallet, keys and personal documents, police said.
