WOODBRIDGE, NJ -- A Woodbridge man faces up to 25 years in prison after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor in Union County, authorities said Thursday.

Jose Tavera, 39, of the township's Sewaren section was found guilty after a trial in state Superior Court, Elizabeth, Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow said.

The jury found him guilty of sexual assault, attempted sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Investigators determined that Tavera assaulted the victim between September 2007 and September 2009, Romankow said. The abuse took place in Union County when the victim was less than 13 years old.

Tavera was remanded to the Union County Jail, the prosecutor said. He faces up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced May 20 by Superior Court Judge Joseph Perfilio.

The case was prosecuted by Union County Assistant Prosecutor Melissa Spagnoli.
