Woodbridge Republicans haggle over nominations

Debra Reinhart poses with Gov. Chris Christie outside the Community Center on Tuesday. Reinhart wants to run for Township Council on the GOP line.
UPDATE: A previous version of this article misrepresented Nelson Diaz’s background; He did not serve time for robbery. It is unclear whether or not he would be able to hold a municipal job in Woodbridge. The article has been changed to reflect this corrected information.
UPDATE: Saturday, March 19: The following was released by Woodbridge Township Republican Organization treasurer Richard Estock on Friday afternoon: "In light of new information concerning one of the potential candidates, it was decided to rescind the recommendation for Nelson Diaz for an At-Large seat and instead recommend Susan Boros." Our previous report appears below.
WOODBRIDGE, NJ -- When township Republicans meet Monday evening to nominate candidates for mayor and the Township Council, their biggest decision might be whether or not to give the nod to a former convict.
The party’s executive committee this week selected Nelson "Runaway" Diaz, a Christian hip-hop artist from Colonia who penned a tribute song to injured Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand, as one of the candidates they’d recommend to the full membership Monday.
Party chairman John Vrtaric, however, said that may no longer be the case because party officials were unaware of the candidate’s past when they made their decision.
Diaz had discussed his checkered past with the Home News Tribune in December. Diaz could not be reached for comment Friday.
The decision to back Diaz irked one aspiring Republican nominee who was snubbed by the panel of screeners.
Debra Reinhart said Vrtaric and the other Republican leaders passed over her because she’s a woman. She still intends to seek the party line at Monday’s meeting.
“They would rather support a convicted felon,” the mother of six said. “I’ve never even had a parking ticket.”
“He does not belong in public office,” she said about Diaz.
Reinhart last year came a few votes shy of winning one of three open seats on the school board, besting fellow Republican Tom Maras, who is making a second try this year for the school board. Reinhart has accused Maras of impersonating her on an NJ.com’s forum, a charge he denies.
Reinhart scored a coup by being the only Woodbridge Republican to meet with Gov. Chris Christie during his town hall visit this week. Reinhart posed with Christie for a photograph and said the governor told her he’d support her candidacy.
The executive board also passed over the nominations of Christopher Struben, a failed two-time candidate for mayor, opting for Councilman Robert Luban to run against Mayor John E. McCormac, and chose as council candidates Ken Russo, Anthony Cuntala and Scott Brescher over Sue Boros and Susan Hogan.
Pradip “Peter” Kothari is unopposed to fill the unexpired term of the 3rd Ward council seat currently held by Democrat Michele Charmello.

This should be of no surprise to any REAL Republican! The regime of Vrtaric and cohorts cannot spell GOP, nor cite 1 Republican platform or principle.
Debra should take this blessing in disguise and run as a REAL Republican against the other characters. It isn’t like the WTRO even knows how to support a real candidate anyway.
Word on the street is the WTRO kicked Nelson Diaz to the curb last night at the committee of one meeting in Vrtaric’s barber shop. Johnny talked to the mirror and they took a vote after coming to their senses! :) Now that’s funny. I don’t care who you are!

Debra Reinhart is a racist. How can anyone want to election another person like this to help Woodbridge. She uses the “mother of six” as her crutch. People need to get over this and vote for a more solid person who care about the people not about the color of their skin.

I would like to know why you have chosen not to run my comment about Debra Reinhart? You ran the person above comment…. The people deserve to know the truth about the candidates running for office and this woman does not belong in public office. Please post my comment or let me know why you have chosen not to. Thank you.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Please re-submit your comment. You can comment on facts that have been reported. But do not accuse people of crimes unless you have something to back that up.

My comment did not accuse anyone of a crime. I was under the impression this forum is about posting the truth about these candidates and letting the people of Woodbridge have all the facts about each candidate before making an educated decision and picking the right person for the job. If there’s favoritism being given, then the residents of Woodbridge will be the ones to suffer. You already have my comment on record, why should I have to re-submit? Here is what’s important….”THE RESIDENTS OF WOODBRIDGE”, not the individual running for office.

When did “he does not belong in public office” become a racist comment? If Mr. Diaz has a criminal record, which Ms. Reinhart makes reference to, then she is merely stating a fact….once you have a criminal record you can’t run for office. Never mind the fact that folks already in office seem to be able to commit all the crimes they want — election law says ex-convicts cannot run for or hold public office. Sounds like there is yet another person besides Tom Maras & Jane Heider have a vendetta for Debra…wonder what they’re afraid of?

Maybe you need to re-read the post. She is not being called a racist because she made a statement “he does not belong in public office”, and this is not about Mr. Diaz. This is about Ms. Reinhart. Why is it that she can accused people of impersonating her without proof, but it seems no one can question her credibility. Why? Is there some thing she’s afraid of? She is running for public office, not the people commenting on her as a person/candidate. Why not use the time, finance and research ability to investigate the people running for office, instead of being angry at the people who wants to know the true about their candidates. This isn’t a vendetta against anyone. If Ms. Reinhart doesn’t have anything to hide, then she should address the questions posed to her about her family background, etc. She mentioned in her resume her family and she mentioned in the article about parking tickets. Jane is just asking her to come forward with the truth. What is wrong with that? When you are running for office, you put yourself and your family at the mercy of the public and the public has a right to know about all their candidates and have a right to ask questions. I don’t see why Ms. Reinhart should be exempt from being forth coming with the people she is asking for their votes.
