Woodbridge Republicans haggle over nominations

Debra Reinhart poses with Gov. Chris Christie outside the Community Center on Tuesday. Reinhart wants to run for Township Council on the GOP line.

UPDATE: A previous version of this article misrepresented Nelson Diaz’s background; He did not serve time for robbery. It is unclear whether or not he would be able to hold a municipal job in Woodbridge. The article has been changed to reflect this corrected information.

UPDATE: Saturday, March 19: The following was released by Woodbridge Township Republican Organization treasurer Richard Estock on Friday afternoon: "In light of new information concerning one of the potential candidates, it was decided to rescind the recommendation for Nelson Diaz for an At-Large seat and instead recommend Susan Boros." Our previous report appears below.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ -- When township Republicans meet Monday evening to nominate candidates for mayor and the Township Council, their biggest decision might be whether or not to give the nod to a former convict.

The party’s executive committee this week selected Nelson "Runaway" Diaz, a Christian hip-hop artist from Colonia who penned a tribute song to injured Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand, as one of the candidates they’d recommend to the full membership Monday.

Party chairman John Vrtaric, however, said that may no longer be the case because party officials were unaware of the candidate’s past when they made their decision.

Diaz had discussed his checkered past with the Home News Tribune in December. Diaz could not be reached for comment Friday.

The decision to back Diaz irked one aspiring Republican nominee who was snubbed by the panel of screeners.

Debra Reinhart said Vrtaric and the other Republican leaders passed over her because she’s a woman. She still intends to seek the party line at Monday’s meeting.

“They would rather support a convicted felon,” the mother of six said. “I’ve never even had a parking ticket.”

“He does not belong in public office,” she said about Diaz.

Reinhart last year came a few votes shy of winning one of three open seats on the school board, besting fellow Republican Tom Maras, who is making a second try this year for the school board. Reinhart has accused Maras of impersonating her on an NJ.com’s forum, a charge he denies.

Reinhart scored a coup by being the only Woodbridge Republican to meet with Gov. Chris Christie during his town hall visit this week. Reinhart posed with Christie for a photograph and said the governor told her he’d support her candidacy.

The executive board also passed over the nominations of Christopher Struben, a failed two-time candidate for mayor, opting for Councilman Robert Luban to run against Mayor John E. McCormac, and chose as council candidates Ken Russo, Anthony Cuntala and Scott Brescher over Sue Boros and Susan Hogan.

Pradip “Peter” Kothari is unopposed to fill the unexpired term of the 3rd Ward council seat currently held by Democrat Michele Charmello.
