WOODBRIDGE, NJ -- Bowling alone? Not at Woodbridge Bowling Center, where there's a league playing virtually every day and evening of the week.

A few thousand people come to the 24-lane bowling alley and bar every week, said owner Joe DiSilvestro, who bought the Main Street venue from his boss of 20 years in 2002.

“I started at 16 working at another bowling center. I just enjoyed it. It was fun,” said DiSilvestro, 50, who still bowls twice a week.

From the looks of the crowds at Woodbridge Bowling Center, the sport is for everyone.

Seniors make use of the facility Mondays for their leagues. Teens come in after school, some to practice for their high school teams, others to spend time with friends.

“The stereotype of the game used to be blue-collar workers and beer bellies,” DiSilvestro said. “I see doctors and lawyers coming here all the time.”

Former football star Lawrence Taylor once stopped by for a game, as did Barry Manilow, who showed up with his staff after a concert a few years ago.

“I started bowling with my dad. I used to go bowling Saturday night and then I joined a kids league. It kept going from there,” he said.

His four daughters, ages 16 to 23, also started young and played for their high school teams.

To play the game well DiSilvestro said you need “dedication, the right equipment … throw the ball and have a good time. Not too much involved.”

“It's very relaxing,” he said. “You've got pressure at work, come in, knock some pins down and it makes you feel good.”
