WOODBRIDGE, NJDavid Tyree admits he wouldn’t be so well-known it weren’t for his awkward, but crucial, helmet catch that helped win Super Bowl XLII for the New York Giants in 2008.

But that’s life, he told several hundred students at Fords Middle School Tuesday. It’s all about luck, hard work and seizing opportunities.

The retired football hero from Wayne visited the school after students raised more than $1,800 selling a hip-hop single by Colonia resident Nelson “Runaway” Diaz. The song is about Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand, left paralyzed after a game injury last fall; the money raised is for the Eric LeGrand Believe Fund.

Tyree, who works with his friend Diaz raising money for the LeGrand family through TeamBelieveOnline.com, agreed to visit the Woodbridge school that raised the most money selling CDs.

Tyree told the students to use their talents to help others.

“I’ve had the privilege to experience, achieve and do a lot of things in my short life,” he said. “There are a lot of things I can be proud of but nothing is more fulfilling than to take the journey to impact someone’s life.”

“I take for granted that I can get up and walk out of bed. Now I know someone and that is not his circumstance right now. He was very likely going to be an NFL draft pick.”

Tyree, who graduated from Montclair High School and played for Syracuse University, told students that success is difficult but not impossible.

“I’m just a kid from up the Parkway,” he said. “In high school there were three or four people who were better athletes than me, but they didn’t seize the opportunity or make the right choices to align their lives with their gifts.”

Tyree and New Jersey Devils legend Ken Danyeko will raise more money for LeGrand 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, at the Woodbridge Community Center. Both will sell photo and autograph opportunities.
