A group representing police chiefs is encouraging officers not to give a break to teen drivers stopped for violations of the state’s Graduated Driver’s License law, saying they want to prevent accidents and save lives.

Between 2009 and 2010, the number of teen drivers and teen passengers killed in crashes in New Jersey dropped by 20 percent, which the chiefs association attributes to a 50 percent increase of enforcement of GDL requirements that took effect last year, according to a report in NJ Press Media newspapers.

Locally, Lisa Metzger, whose daughter died in a car crash in 2009, has been trying beef up laws against speeding.
