Luban won’t debate Republican rival in mayoral primary

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Looking for a debate between the two Republican candidates for mayor of Woodbridge?

Well, look no further. There won’t be one.

Christopher Struben and his team spent weeks goading Robert Luban to go mano-a-mano. But Luban, the veteran Colonia councilman running as the Republican committee’s choice for mayor, refused to bite.

Luban insisted from the start that the debate be between 10 people -- both he and his GOP rival as well as all eight Republican council candidates -- at the same time.

Struben recently said he’d agree to Luban’s terms. But two weeks ago Luban said it was too late.

“Now there will be no debate,” Luban said. “That was just a decision by the team. We are in this together. We want to change the way the town is being run as far as finances. We want to debate as a team. I have built a very loyal team of people.”

Struben said Luban is ducking a debate because “he is indistinguishable from a Democrat.”

On Tuesday, June 7, primary voters will decide which Republicans will take on Democratic Mayor John E. McCormac and his at-large council team in November. Democratic voters will choose four candidates out of a field of five. Jean Pierce is the sole challenger against the Democrat incumbents.

Asked if he'd insist on the same terms if he were nominated to face McCormac, Luban said "that depends on how the campaign goes."
