Last week Edward O’Connor joined about 400 other cancer survivors and their guests, caregivers and medical staff from the center to observe National Cancer Survivorship Day, an annual event that allows cancer patients treated in the local community to connect with other survivors and recognize health care providers, families and friends who have supported them along the way.

There are about 12 million cancer survivors in the United States, some of whom face hindered access to cancer specialists and new treatments, inadequate or no insurance, financial hardship, employment problems and psychological issues.

O’Connor underwent chemotherapy and radiation at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the Basking Ridge section of Bernards.

Today, about two months after his last treatment, O’Connor’s prognosis looks good. His latest CAT scan was clean. His health will continue to be monitored three or four times a year for the next three years.
