The housing authority will stop accepting new applicants June 30. Elsewhere in New Jersey, waiting lists can remain closed for years, according to a report Wednesday in the Home News Tribune.
The National Low-Income Housing Coalition ranked New Jersey the fourth-most expensive state to afford a two-bedroom apartment.
While a one-bedroom might go for a fair-market rate of $1,092, the monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for a senior in New Jersey is $705, the organization found.
An apartment is considered affordable if it costs up to 30 percent of a renter’s income, meaning someone on SSI would be able to afford just $212 a month in rent.
To qualify for senior housing in Woodbridge, the applicant or spouse must be a township resident, be at least 62 years old, be near-elderly (50-61) and permanently disabled, or an adult in need of a wheelchair-accessible unit.
Residents who meet the eligibility requirements should obtain an application at the Woodbridge Housing Authority offices at 20 Bunns Ln., Woodbridge.
An application can also be downloaded via the Woodbridge Housing Authority web page at: http://www.woodbridgehousingauthority.org.
