Iselin fundraiser for cancer patient facing eviction

Tommy Shevlin and his family.
WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Donna Lane remembers her brother, Tommy Shevlin, getting lots of headaches, daydreaming when people spoke to him, and forgetting where he placed things.
Then, in January, after a car accident, the family learned what was wrong. The daydreaming episodes were seizures, which, along with the memory loss and pain, were symptoms of a rare terminal brain cancer called oligodendroglioma.
Shevlin, 38, who lives in upstate New York with his wife, six children and a granddaughter, is facing eviction from his apartment.
Unable to work, he is waiting for disability payments to kick in. The family’s sole car, which he uses to drive 100 miles to doctor appointments in Staten Island, N.Y., and Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, often breaks down.
Lane is helping her brother with a fundraiser from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday at the Knights of Columbus, 116 Grand St., Iselin.
She wants to find him a place closer to his doctors and buy him a reliable vehicle. She already is helping to pay his utility bills.
Lane, who lives in Iselin, said doctors don’t yet know how long her brother will survive.
“They have to wait until it (the cancer) gets aggressive; they can’t remove it,” she said.
Lane is looking for donations of food, plates and utensils for the Friday event.
Disco legend Carol Douglas will perform and “Batman,” Newark Police Det. Genaro Ortiz Jr. and his Batmobile, will make an appearance.
Donations can be made out to the “Thomas Shevlin Cancer Foundation” and mailed to 1 Falmouth Road, Iselin, NJ 08830.
Lane can be reached at tomshevfoundation@verizon.net or (732) 535-1134.
