No India Day Parade? Rival Indian business groups battle over permits

There may not be an India Day Parade this summer because of a rivalry between two local ethnic business groups and Edison's refusal to grant either of them permits until they agree to work together, according to the Home News Tribune.

The annual Indian Day Parade has been organized for the last six years by the Indian Business Association in celebration of India’s Independence Day. But rival Oak Tree Road Business Association applied for a parade permit on Aug. 10, the day after last year’s event and 17 days before the Indian Business Association, the parade’s longtime organizer.

The parade attracts 37,000 visitors to the Little India business community on Oak Tree Road in the township and the Iselin section of Woodbridge.

Permits also are required from Woodbridge and the county because Oak Tree Road is a county road. The Indian Business Association possesses both of those permits.

The township’s administration initially granted the Oak Tree group a parade permit but withdrew it because of failure to obtain the other permits.

Mayor Antonia Ricigliano has said that a permit will not be granted to either group unless they can work together.
