The first service of the church was conducted in 1698 by the Rev. Edward Portlock, an Anglican missionary. Before a building was built on the site in 1711, services were held in private homes, including at the Benjamin Dunham house, which later became the church rectory. The current building was built in 1860 after the first was rebuilt in 1754 and the second burned in 1858. Early church members were Revolutionary supporters and soldiers. The church was placed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 2004.
